CHANGE TO PADDLING TIMES.

As of next week our paddling training times will change.

Wednesday 5.00pm for 5.15pm OTW

Saturday & Sunday 7am for 7.30am OTW.

Once daylight saving starts Wednesday will change to 5.00pm for 5.30 OTW.

We look forward to welcoming back past members as well as anyone wanting to try dragon boating to these sessions.

Dragon boating is an enticing proposition for mature paddlers and fitness orientated families alike. It offers a fantastic way to stay social and fit during C-19, the view is amazing and the exercise feels great.

It's 8:30am and Flamin' Dragons Port Macquarie Sporting Club members gather at the Port Macquarie Marina for what promises to be a glorious morning on the river. The sun sparkles on tiny wavelets rippling gently from a light breeze, warm with the promise of spring.

The morning starts with some leisurely warm up exercises. The paddlers step back from the carpark roadway whenever a vehicle happens along and the drivers smile broadly at the cheery group. It's hard not to smile. These are happy people.

Flamin' Dragons Port Macquarie originated around a group of breast cancer survivors but these days, they are an official sports club and they welcome men, woman and children as young as 10 years old. Paddling has been growing in popularity for several years as it offers a very social and fun exercise proposition for people of all fitness levels.

This mornings group is comprised of men and women of mixed ages trending towards 'youthful older people'. Incredibly friendly, quietly spoken. Quick with a laugh. It's the kind of group you could trust with your health to during a pandemic.

The club has initiated strict wash down procedures for boats and equipment after every outing and also reduced crew sizes from 20 down to 10 or 12. Couples and family members are able to be seated together but everyone else is staggered along the rows of seats.

A large pelican watches on as crews use custom trollies to stroll the boats over to boat ramp. They are placed in the water with such little effort, one starts to get a sense of relief as club boating holds none of the drama, expense and effort of owning a boat yourself.

The boats are boarded in a trice. Every paddler has a special place and within minutes, all are seated, paddles at the ready. The closest anyone comes to falling in is the photographer snapping merrily away from the jetty and almost going for a swim, camera and all. Ha!

The tiller calls the stroke and paddles dig hungrily.

Stroke, stroke, stroke.

All onboard afforded a special kind of Zen.

One with the boat.
One with the waters.
One with the wildlife that surround them.

Stroke, stroke, stroke.

One of the wonderful things about dragon boating is you can put in as much or as little effort as you like (as befits your age and fitness). This makes dragon boating perfect for older members but also for families. In a dragon boat, children, parents - even grandparents can all enjoy exercising at the same time with each individual paddling at their own comfort level.

Club captain Lyn Elliot says paddling on the river offers many of the benefits of a gym but in an outdoor setting with fresh air and simply a stunning setting.

'On the water, you have wildlife and birds, sometimes we see dolphins. Every time we paddle, it puts me in a very relaxed and wonderful state'.

Each week at 8:30am - Saturday or Sunday, the club welcomes potential new members to join the fun with a 45 minute free 'test' paddle. Lyn says 'All you need to worry about is turning up in clothes you don't mind getting wet such as shorts or leggings plus a t-shirt and some layers if it's cold'

A life vest and paddle are provided for new paddlers but as with all boating activities, water to drink, sunscreen and a hat are a good idea.

Lyn says, 'We never turn anybody away - we are an inclusive club. Everyone gets to have a go and have some fun. We can always get more boats!'

When regattas recommence, there will be lots of opportunity for racing if that is something that excites you with many opportunities for younger paddlers who can potentially compete at a national level but there is no obligation to compete.

Right now, it is the perfect time to have a test paddle because it is the start of a new club year. If you are Interested in differentiated, low impact group exercise. Have a chat with Lyn and come paddling this weekend!
